Using vocabulary picture cards with low-level learners

Abstract: Acquiring and retaining an expansive vocabulary in one’s L2 (or beyond) is often considered to be one of the most important aspects of language study. In the following research on human memory acquisition, the Phonological/Articulatory Loop, the Keyword Method and uses of imagery, and the Lexical Approach is summarized and applied to vocabulary learning. A classroom technique is then described that is easily reproducible and makes use of student-prepared materials, with some ideas for utilizing the materials and the benefits that could be gained thereby also described.

Preparing students for the Eiken interview test

Abstract: The Eiken test (short for eigonoryokushiken or ‘test of English proficiency’) is one of the most popular English ability tests for junior and senior high school students in Japan. It is administered tri-annually in January, June and October. There are five standard levels to the Eiken test (with level one being the highest), and two ‘pre-‘ levels (pre-second and pre-first). Each test includes: a vocabulary/grammar section, a reading comprehension section, and a listening section. Levels three through one also include an interview test for those students who pass the initial written portion of the test. Since only those students who pass both the written and interview tests are considered to have passed their levels, a great deal of importance is placed on the interview itself. This article will focus on the second level of the test, and aims to help teachers prepare students for the Eiken interview test.
